The Female of the Species

A comic play by Joanna Murray-Smith, an Australian writer, first performed in 2006

The play is a satire about celebrity feminists, with a plot loosely inspired by a real-life incident in 2000, when author Germaine Greer was held at gunpoint in her own home by a disturbed student.

This is where the fun starts: characters, from our time, in an unusual situation delivering extraordinary clever and funny lines. The play makes us laugh at gender politics, at the travails of full-time motherhood, at self-esteem manifestos, metro-sexuals and sensitive new-age guys, at sociological fashionability and even at the victory of marketing over content in publishing, it can also laugh at some old-school feminist dogma.

We invite you to come and share an end-of-year evening of laughs at The Henry Lawson Theatre. The play, when it was performed in London in 2008, was described as: “An adult comedy, with some strong language and political jokes BUT is the sparkiest, freshest thing on the West End stage this summer.” ( Quentin Letts – The Daily Mirror )
