Get on the river
The Nepean River runs through the heart of Penrith and there are many ways to experience it and enjoy it. But if you’re wanting a deeper connection to nature and a truly unforgettable experience then you need to get on the water. Hire a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard from nearby Horizon Line to explore the calm waters and take in the natural beauty and the serenity of the River and surrounding bushland. Or take laid-back approach, sit back and enjoy the scenery with a cruise on the Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler.
Explore by foot
The Great River Walk is a 7km trail that runs along the picturesque banks of the Nepean River between Penrith and Emu Plains. Along this path you’ll find lookout points and sculptural seating areas where you can take in the breathtaking views of the Blue Mountains and watch boats, birds and other wildlife on the river. There’s plenty of cafes and restaurants to stop at along the way or you can pack up some tasty local produce for a picnic in one of the quiet, leafy spots by the water.
Go bush
For uninterrupted, breathtaking views of the Nepean River and Blue Mountains National Park take a short bush walk to the Rock Lookout. If you’re up for something more challenging, then there’s a longer track of 2.5 kilometres which takes you to Riley’s Mountain. The walk takes you through swampy heath and eucalyptus forest but it’s well worth the effort, as more glorious views of the Nepean River and the Blue Mountains await you at the end.
